Skin condition
Genital warts
Genital warts are common and treatable. The important part is getting a private, accurate evaluation and knowing when in-person care is better.
What's actually going on
Genital warts are usually caused by HPV and can appear as small bumps in the genital, anal, or nearby skin. Many other conditions can mimic them, so photos and history matter, and some cases are better handled in person.
What tends to help
- A judgment-free evaluation
- Confirming the diagnosis before treating
- Discussing prescription options, procedure-based options, and prevention
- Knowing when to involve sexual health or in-person care
What I'd skip
- Burning or cutting lesions at home
- Using wart removers meant for hands or feet on genital skin
- Assuming every bump is HPV without evaluation
When to get in-person or urgent care
- Painful ulcers, rapidly changing lesions, bleeding, fever, pelvic pain, or discharge
- Pregnancy, immunosuppression, or lesions inside the vagina, anus, or urethra
