Skin condition

Intertrigo / yeast rash

Skin folds can get irritated from heat, friction, sweat, and yeast. The fix is usually part medication, part mechanics.

What's actually going on

Intertrigo is inflammation in areas where skin rubs against skin, such as under the breasts, groin, abdomen, armpits, or between toes. Yeast or bacteria can overgrow in the irritated fold, which changes the treatment plan.

What tends to help

  • Reducing moisture and friction
  • Loose, breathable clothing when possible
  • Targeted antifungal, antibacterial, or anti-inflammatory treatment when appropriate
  • A prevention plan for recurrent flares

What I'd skip

  • Fragrant powders or deodorants on raw skin
  • Strong steroid creams used repeatedly in folds
  • Ignoring pain, drainage, or odor that is getting worse

When to get in-person or urgent care

  • Spreading redness, fever, severe pain, open ulcers, or drainage
  • Rash in a skin fold with diabetes or immunosuppression that is worsening quickly
