Keratosis pilaris
A plain-English guide from Dr. Auston Eckert — what those little bumps are, and how to smooth them.
What's actually going on
Keratosis pilaris — the rough, goosebump-like texture on the backs of the arms, thighs, or cheeks — is extremely common and completely harmless. It happens when keratin plugs the hair follicles. It can't be 'cured,' but it can be smoothed and softened with the right routine.
What tends to help
- Gentle exfoliation rather than scrubbing
- Consistent moisturizing to soften texture
- Lukewarm (not hot) showers
- Patience — it improves gradually
What I'd skip
- Picking or aggressive scrubbing
- Harsh soaps that dry skin out
- Expecting it to disappear completely
