Excessive sweating
A plain-English guide from Dr. Auston Eckert — when sweating is more than normal, and what genuinely controls it.
What's actually going on
Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) is when sweat glands are simply overactive — often the underarms, hands, feet, or face — beyond what's needed to cool you down. It's common, it's not about hygiene, and it's very treatable once you move past regular antiperspirant.
What tends to help
- Clinical-strength options when the drugstore kind isn't enough
- Prescription treatments for stubborn cases
- Identifying your patterns and triggers
- Knowing it's a recognized medical condition, not a quirk
What I'd skip
- Assuming you just have to live with it
- Layering on more deodorant and hoping
- Embarrassment that keeps you from treating it
