Warts
A plain-English guide from Dr. Auston Eckert — what warts are, why they linger, and how they're actually treated.
What's actually going on
Warts are small, rough growths caused by a common virus (HPV) infecting the top layer of skin. They're harmless but stubborn and contagious, and they often hang around for months because the immune system is slow to notice them.
What tends to help
- Patience and consistency — most respond over weeks
- Not picking or shaving over them (it spreads them)
- Keeping the area dry and covered
- Targeted treatment when home options stall
What I'd skip
- Cutting or burning them yourself
- Sharing towels, razors, or files
- Expecting one treatment to do it
